The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has sounded an alarm over the potential dangers that sophisticated artificial intelligence systems could pose to the global financial landscape. In a communication directed at G20 finance leaders and heads of central banks, Bailey highlighted that the growing autonomy and problem-solving capabilities of these AI models could lead to significant financial disruptions, possibly triggering a severe economic downturn.
Bailey’s letter emphasized the concern that cyberattacks, facilitated or intensified by advanced AI, could rapidly cascade through interconnected financial systems across various countries. As the chairman of the Financial Stability Board, he pointed out that many nations are currently ill-prepared with protocols necessary for the responsible development and deployment of advanced AI technologies. He underscored the need for enhanced international collaboration to ensure these technologies are introduced and utilized safely.
Identifying cyber risk as a pressing issue, Bailey warned of the potential for AI to escalate the speed, magnitude, and financial repercussions of cyber threats. The dependency on concentrated technology entities and other third-party service providers could further exacerbate the risk of widespread system disruptions. This reliance raises concerns about the ability of financial markets to withstand AI-driven cyber incidents.
Bailey also raised alarms about the dual threats of high asset valuations and increasing leverage within bond and equity markets, which could intensify the impact of any significant financial shock. He pointed out that the strong investor optimism surrounding AI might render markets especially susceptible to a sudden downturn if expectations are not met.
In response to these looming threats, Bailey called upon financial authorities globally to take coordinated actions to address AI-related risks. He urged them to focus on bolstering the resilience of the global financial system to mitigate potential disruptions and maintain stability in the face of emerging AI challenges.
