India is progressing with its initiative to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia. Moscow has already forwarded a cost proposal, paving the way for negotiations with New Delhi. The ultimate decision will rest with the Cabinet Committee on Security, contingent upon successful price negotiations and subsequent clearance from the Finance Ministry. The existing contract for five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is anticipated to conclude with the delivery of the final system by November 2026.
The addition of these proposed systems is expected to significantly bolster India’s air defence capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector, which faces China. The S-400 systems have proven their worth, notably during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, where their performance was instrumental in air defence operations. This successful deployment has further reinforced the argument for augmenting India’s S-400 arsenal.
While the focus remains on the S-400 systems, India has yet to make a concrete decision regarding the acquisition of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. However, the Indian Air Force has shown interest in the proposal, especially given China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in the Tibet region. This interest indicates a potential area for future consideration in enhancing India’s aerial combat capabilities.
The anticipated purchase of additional S-400 systems is likely to be a pivotal topic during broader India-Russia defence discussions. These discussions are set to gain further prominence with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit in September. This visit underscores the strategic defence collaboration between the two nations, positioning the S-400 acquisition as a key element of their ongoing partnership.
