Furthermore, Trump hinted at considering the Strait of Hormuz as a potential “territory of the United States” following a hypothetical victory over Iran.
Iran has strongly rebuffed these assertions, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi emphasizing that the Strait of Hormuz will remain under Iranian control. Iran has maintained its blockade of the vital shipping channel, a move intended to pressure Washington into recognizing what Tehran describes as the reality of its geopolitical standing. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that Tehran has yet to decide on resuming negotiations with the United States, affirming that the blockage will persist unless Iran’s conditions are met.
The standoff has significantly affected global oil and natural gas shipments, as the Strait of Hormuz is a crucial transit route. Iran is also experiencing economic repercussions due to the ongoing conflict. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed the country’s rising inflation to the US blockade, sanctions, and limitations on Iranian oil exports.
