In a significant leadership transition within Google’s AI research unit, Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down as the chief executive of DeepMind. Having co-founded DeepMind in 2010, Hassabis will now take on the role of chair while also serving as chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This change allows him to shift focus from daily management duties to concentrating on long-term AI research and the development of artificial general intelligence.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, who is currently the chief technology officer at DeepMind, will assume the leadership role as senior vice-president. Hassabis expressed that this transition would enable him to dedicate more time to advancing AI technology, ensuring its benefits for humanity. He will also maintain his position as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery enterprise that originated from DeepMind.

This leadership restructuring coincides with the exit of several senior Google AI engineers. Among them are Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, who are departing to establish a new venture named Discovery Loop. Their startup aims to delve into machine learning, science, and engineering research, marking a new chapter in their professional journeys.

The changes within Google’s AI division occur amidst a highly competitive landscape in the AI industry. The company is facing robust challenges from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have made notable advancements in AI models and coding technologies. These strategic shifts reflect Google’s efforts to reinforce its standing in the rapidly evolving field of advanced artificial intelligence.
