India is gearing up to host the BRICS summit this year as it assumes the chairmanship of the group. The summit is scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi, where Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to be in attendance. This significant gathering will mark an important moment for the BRICS coalition, which has grown to include several new member states in recent years.
A Kremlin aide announced that President Putin will participate in the New Delhi summit and is set to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the event. This will be President Putin’s first visit to India since December 2025, when he attended the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was present at a two-day conclave of BRICS member states held in New Delhi, underscoring the importance of the upcoming summit. The BRICS group originally consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, but it has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in 2024, with Indonesia joining in 2025.
The BRICS bloc has emerged as a major global platform, representing 11 leading emerging economies. Collectively, these nations account for nearly 49.5% of the world’s population, about 40% of the global GDP, and approximately 26% of global trade. The summit is expected to address significant economic and geopolitical issues, highlighting the bloc’s influence and the importance of collaboration among its member states.
