Malaysia is in anticipation of receiving the green light from Nepal to send its DNA specialists to assist in identifying victims of the recent catastrophic floods and landslides. According to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, the request for permission has been made, and the process of DNA identification is set to commence once the search and rescue operations are concluded. The Malaysian experts are tasked with matching DNA samples from the recovered bodies against those collected from the families of missing Malaysian nationals.
Currently, Malaysia has acquired DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who remain missing in the wake of these natural disasters. Due to the scarcity of facilities, some of the bodies that were recovered had to be buried promptly, which underscores the necessity of DNA testing for accurate identification. This step is crucial in providing clarity and closure to the families affected by the disaster.
The Malaysian team, consisting of 11 members, is well-equipped for the mission, carrying with them 12.4 tonnes of rescue apparatus. This includes advanced detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. Additionally, the team has brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in the operations.
Through these comprehensive search, rescue, and DNA identification initiatives, Malaysia aims to locate the missing individuals and offer their families the confirmation they desperately need regarding the fate of their loved ones. The combined efforts are a significant step in addressing the aftermath of the disasters and providing much-needed support and answers to the affected families.
