During discussions with India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Carney emphasized the potential of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to unlock substantial economic prospects for Canadian sectors such as energy, agriculture, technology, and education. This optimism was shared by both parties, who expressed confidence in concluding the agreement within the year.
Piyush Goyal, bringing greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighted the focus on enhancing long-term bilateral cooperation and expediting trade negotiations. Canada’s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu was also present in the talks, which confirmed that two negotiation rounds have already been completed, with the next session slated to occur in Canada. Accompanying Minister Goyal was a substantial Indian business delegation, over 100 strong, engaging in trade and investment dialogues in Toronto.
Efforts to strengthen ties extended beyond trade, as Goyal also engaged with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald. These meetings aimed at broadening cooperation across various sectors. The renewed vigor in India-Canada relations marks a notable shift following the diplomatic strain of 2023 when allegations emerged concerning the death of Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, accusations that were firmly denied by India and escalated tensions during Justin Trudeau’s tenure as Prime Minister.
The diplomatic relationship between India and Canada has seen a revitalization since Carney assumed office in 2025. This change in leadership facilitated a renewal of diplomatic dialogues and the resumption of CEPA negotiations. Both nations now appear committed to overcoming past challenges and working towards a mutually beneficial economic partnership.
