US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenced his four-day visit to India on Saturday, with the intent of enhancing strategic relations and expanding collaboration in areas such as trade, defense, energy, and technology. During his stay, Rubio is set to engage in bilateral discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and also meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
Coinciding with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue involving the foreign ministers of India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, this visit will primarily address issues related to Indo-Pacific security. Key topics on the agenda include defense cooperation, critical technologies, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and strengthening supply chains, particularly in the context of rising concerns about China’s expanding influence in the region.
Trade relations between the US and India are anticipated to be a significant point of discussion, especially following the tensions spurred by former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on Indian exports. Both nations aim to explore opportunities to bolster economic ties and alleviate trade tensions. Energy security is another focal point, with the US seeking to increase its crude oil and LNG exports to India, while ongoing talks continue regarding India’s procurement of discounted Russian oil.
Defense collaboration remains a cornerstone of the dialogue, given that India operates multiple US-made defense systems, including Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers, and C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. Discussions are expected to cover joint production and partnerships in advanced defense and space technologies, reflecting the deepening defense ties between the two countries.
Throughout his visit, Rubio will travel to various Indian cities, including Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. In Kolkata, he is scheduled to visit the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, an organization founded by Mother Teresa, further highlighting the diverse aspects of his diplomatic mission.
