India Condemns US Green Card Restrictions Impacting Major Tech Companies

by admin477351

India has expressed strong disapproval of the United States’ decision to halt certain Green Card application processes for eight leading technology companies, arguing that this move undermines the shared economic goals of both nations. The suspension affects firms such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Cognizant, Microsoft, Adobe, and Capgemini, impacting their ability to sponsor foreign workers under the Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) program.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the mutual benefits derived from the movement of skilled professionals, highlighting their contributions to innovation, research, productivity, competitiveness, and job creation in the U.S. economy. The ministry assured that current H-1B visa holders and their dependents are not automatically affected by this decision, but acknowledged potential delays or disruptions for employees seeking permanent residency.

New Delhi also took issue with U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s remarks, which referred to foreign professionals as “indentured servants.” The ministry criticized this description as “unwarranted and deeply offensive,” pointing out that it ignores the qualifications and economic contributions of Indian workers. They further condemned the terminology for its historical implications and colonial connotations, stressing the pivotal role immigrants play in U.S. economic growth and innovation.

The decision adds another layer to the ongoing trade and immigration tensions between the two countries. Indian tech firms have long depended on skilled-worker visa programs to deploy professionals in the U.S., while American tech companies benefit from access to international talent. The new restrictions create additional uncertainty for companies reliant on highly skilled foreign workers and could complicate permanent residency plans for affected employees.
