Veteran actor Nana Patekar, renowned for his intense performances and unique dialogue delivery, has passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026. His career, which spanned nearly five decades, left a significant mark on Indian cinema, challenging traditional notions of a Bollywood hero through his portrayal of complex characters.
Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, Nana Patekar began his film journey with the 1978 Hindi movie “Gaman” and soon became a prominent figure in Marathi cinema. He gained wider recognition with his role in “Aaj Ki Awaz” (1984), and his performance in “Ankush” (1986) solidified his reputation for playing emotionally intense and unconventional roles.
Patekar’s talent was further acknowledged with his role in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!”, which earned him critical acclaim. His performance in “Parinda” won him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, leading to more prominent roles in films like “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer.” The latter brought him the National Film Award for Best Actor, establishing him as a leading figure in mainstream Hindi cinema.
In addition to acting, Patekar ventured into filmmaking, making his directorial debut with “Prahaar” in 1991, a film that later gained a dedicated following. His versatility shone through as he moved between lead and supporting roles, taking on a variety of genres including comedy, with memorable performances in films such as “Welcome” (2007), where his comic timing was widely appreciated.
Despite his professional successes, Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta renewed allegations of sexual harassment against him related to the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied the claims, and a closure report by Mumbai police cited insufficient evidence to proceed. This controversy became part of the broader #MeToo movement in India.
Through a diverse array of performances in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, Nana Patekar’s legacy remains influential. He is celebrated for his distinctive acting style and dedication to authentic, character-driven roles, leaving a lasting impact on generations of performers and securing his place as one of India’s most distinctive actors.
