Tech Advances Lower India’s Crude Costs, Petrol/Diesel Prices Stay Unchanged

by admin477351

In a notable development, India’s average crude oil import price has dipped below $70 per barrel, marking a first since the onset of the conflict in West Asia. This decrease provides relief to fuel retailers, yet consumers might not experience an immediate drop in petrol and diesel prices. The Indian crude basket price has fallen to approximately $68.86 per barrel, a significant reduction of over 50% from its peak during the conflict, which had previously caused a surge in global oil prices.

This decline in crude prices has allowed state-owned fuel companies to recover from earlier financial losses incurred by maintaining stable retail prices amidst the crisis. While oil marketing companies are now seeing profits from petrol sales, they continue to incur losses on diesel. According to officials, these companies are likely to prioritize recouping past losses before considering any substantial price cuts for consumers.

India’s heavy reliance on global energy markets is underscored by its importation of more than 88% of the crude oil it processes. The conflict had previously led to increased costs for fuel companies due to rising crude prices and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz. Despite these challenges, the government had taken steps to mitigate the impact on consumers, including reducing excise duties on petrol and diesel and absorbing significant financial costs to prevent sharp increases in fuel prices during the global energy disruption.

The easing of oil prices can be attributed to diplomatic efforts by major powers, which have alleviated fears of further conflict escalation and facilitated the recovery of energy shipments through vital routes. India’s petroleum ministry highlighted that the country successfully avoided fuel shortages, thanks to its diversified oil supplies, robust import infrastructure, and strategic reserves. Nonetheless, even with reduced crude costs, retail fuel prices are expected to remain stable for the foreseeable future.
