Pralhad Joshi has been appointed as India’s new Education Minister, taking on additional responsibilities following the resignation of his predecessor, Dharmendra Pradhan. Joshi’s tenure began with a focus on reviewing crucial education programs and the progression of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He officially assumed his new role at Kartavya Bhavan in New Delhi, where he engaged in discussions with senior officials from both the Departments of School Education and Higher Education to familiarize himself with the ministry’s current projects.
Recognizing that this portfolio marks a new venture for him, Joshi expressed a commitment to thoroughly understanding the intricacies of the ministry before offering specific insights or making significant changes. He acknowledged the importance of the education sector and the need for a deliberate approach to ensure effective oversight and adaptation to ongoing initiatives.
Joshi emphasized that his appointment came at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has entrusted him with steering the education ministry. His initial focus will be on grasping the department’s operations while maintaining continuity in major educational programs. This approach reflects a strategy aimed at ensuring a seamless transition and sustained progress in the initiatives already underway.
The decision to assign Joshi this additional role followed the acceptance of Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation by President Droupadi Murmu. As Joshi takes on this new challenge, he is expected to bring his extensive experience in government to bear on advancing the education sector in line with the goals set by the NEP 2020.
