Kiren Rijiju, India’s Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, recently traveled to Doha to extend heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Indian government following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit served to reinforce the strong diplomatic ties that exist between India and Qatar, a relationship marked by mutual respect and cooperation over the years.
During his visit, Minister Rijiju met with Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He conveyed the sympathies of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the legacy of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani as a visionary leader. Rijiju emphasized the late Father Amir’s significant role in advancing Qatar’s development and enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations. The minister noted that the Indian community in Qatar held the Father Amir in high regard and mourned his passing deeply.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had paid tribute to the Father Amir, acknowledging him as a true friend of India. Modi lauded Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s contributions to strengthening bilateral ties between India and Qatar, underscoring the depth of the relationship between the two countries.
In a gesture of respect and in recognition of the Father Amir’s impact, India declared a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026. During this time, the national flag was flown at half-mast across government buildings, and all official entertainment activities were suspended.
