In a landmark move towards greener rail transport, India has introduced its inaugural hydrogen fuel cell-powered train. This pioneering initiative was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jind, Haryana, exemplifying India’s strides in integrating sustainable energy solutions into its transportation infrastructure.
The ambitious project incorporates a comprehensive hydrogen production and refuelling system, alongside a locomotive driven by fuel cells. The hydrogen is generated on-site via an electrolyzer, then compressed and stored, before being efficiently dispensed into the train through a specialized hydrogen refuelling station. This facility is equipped with high-pressure compressors and hydrogen dispensers, managed by an automated fuel management platform that ensures safe and effective operations throughout the refuelling process.
Highlighting India’s burgeoning expertise in indigenous hydrogen infrastructure, officials emphasized that this project is a significant component of the country’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. Plans are underway to extend similar hydrogen refuelling systems to several heritage railway routes, such as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway, and Nilgiri Mountain Railway, broadening the scope of clean energy applications in rail transport.
Hydrogen fuel cell trains present a promising alternative to traditional diesel-powered locomotives by generating electricity through the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, with only water vapor emitted as a byproduct. This innovative technology is poised to play a crucial role in diminishing carbon emissions within the transport sector, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
