As India and China continue to navigate their complex relationship, maintaining peace and tranquillity along their shared border remains paramount. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval emphasized this during his recent meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, a critical dialogue that marked the 25th round of talks between the two nations’ special representatives concerning their protracted boundary dispute. Key discussions focused on advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and expanding bilateral cooperation across the frontier.
Both countries took a positive view of the progress in their bilateral relations and discussed strategies to uphold stability along the Line of Actual Control. A mutual commitment to politically resolving the boundary issue, in alignment with long-term interests, was reaffirmed. This meeting comes on the heels of the 2024 understanding reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to ameliorate tensions in the Ladakh sector. As a result, activities such as people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and designated border trade have resumed.
Doval noted that bilateral ties are gradually returning to normalcy, attributing this improvement to the ongoing maintenance of peace along the border. Meanwhile, China suggested that the boundary issue should be viewed within the broader context of the bilateral relationship. Although specific details about the demarcation of the disputed boundary were not disclosed, both sides agreed to continue negotiations. The next round of special representative talks is scheduled to take place in India in 2027.
These discussions occur ahead of a significant event, the expected visit of President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This upcoming visit underscores the importance of stabilizing and enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries. Both nations appear committed to ensuring that their diplomatic engagements continue to progress smoothly, with the aim of fostering a more stable and cooperative future.
