Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) plan to hold rallies throughout Assam from October 13 to October 31, aimed at countering what the party views as Congress’s attempts to undermine democratic institutions. These rallies are intended to take place at district headquarters across the state and will express support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi while reinforcing public trust in constitutional bodies.
In a press briefing held in Guwahati, Sarma accused Congress and other opposition parties of politicizing key institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court for their political gain. He emphasized the importance of these rallies in voicing opposition to Congress’s stance and bolstering confidence in democratic processes.
Additionally, the Assam Chief Minister criticized Congress’s resistance to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which he argues is essential for addressing voter list discrepancies and concerns over illegal immigration in Assam. Sarma’s remarks underscore the ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress, particularly regarding electoral reforms and institutional independence.
Sarma also took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of double standards in evaluating election results based on the winning political party. He further criticized Gandhi’s approach towards the Supreme Court, arguing that constitutional institutions should remain free from political influence.
The BJP’s scheduled rallies are seen as a direct response to these criticisms, emphasizing the party’s commitment to supporting democratic institutions and challenging Congress’s approach to electoral and constitutional matters. This announcement comes in the backdrop of heightened political disputes over electoral processes and immigration-related issues in Assam.
