Residents and commuters in Delhi can expect a significant reduction in travel time with the opening of the long-awaited Barapullah Phase III elevated corridor. Scheduled to be accessible from September 29, the new infrastructure promises to cut journey times between East Delhi and South Delhi, potentially reducing what is currently a 35–40 minute trip to just about 15 minutes, depending on traffic conditions and starting point.
This 3.5-kilometer corridor connects Mayur Vihar Phase I with Sarai Kale Khan and integrates with the existing Barapullah corridor, creating a nearly signal-free route that should streamline travel towards areas like AIIMS. The development is expected to enhance connectivity between Mayur Vihar, East Delhi, Noida, and key locations in South Delhi.
The project features a four-lane corridor complete with a bridge over the Yamuna River, nine traffic-distribution loops, connecting ramps, a dedicated cycle track, and pedestrian facilities. This infrastructure is designed to facilitate smoother and more efficient travel for both motorists and cyclists, providing a much-needed upgrade to Delhi’s transportation network.
Initially approved in 2014, the project faced numerous delays due to issues such as land acquisition, the need for various clearances, construction challenges, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These setbacks not only prolonged the construction timeline but also increased the project’s estimated cost from ₹1,260 crore to approximately ₹1,635 crore.
Despite these challenges, construction of major structures, including the critical Yamuna bridge and connecting ramps, has been completed. With final preparations underway, the corridor is on track to welcome commuters by the end of September, offering a much-anticipated improvement to Delhi’s transportation infrastructure.
