Protests in Delhi Continue as Modi Government Faces Accusations of Targeting Dissent

by admin477351

Protests in Delhi have intensified as the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) accuses Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of stifling democratic dissent and fostering an atmosphere of fear. This unrest follows allegations against Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for a voter-list revision that reportedly purged approximately 130 million names from India’s electoral rolls, potentially disenfranchising minority communities and benefiting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Protest leaders, including Abhijit Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka, were detained during demonstrations but released under conditions to prevent public disorder. Despite their detention, they vowed to persist with the protests, criticizing the government’s heavy-handed response. The BJP denies any political interference, asserting the voter-list revision is a legitimate effort to remove ineligible voters.

Authorities have responded with extensive security measures, including police barricades and restrictions on public transport and internet services. Thousands of protesters were reportedly detained as police sought to prevent gatherings. Student activist Neha Bora and Delhi University student Surbi Yadav, both detained during the protests, have alleged abusive treatment and overcrowded detention conditions, with Yadav also accusing police of excessive force.

At a press conference, CJP leaders expanded their criticism to include Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the government of using force to maintain political control. Das emphasized that the protests would continue amid these broader grievances. The BJP dismissed the accusations as baseless, maintaining that the voter-list revision was not intended to influence election outcomes.

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has joined calls for accountability concerning the voter-list changes, adding pressure on the ruling party regarding electoral process integrity. The ongoing demonstrations underscore rising political tensions in India over electoral transparency, civil liberties, and the management of public protests. Protesters have pledged to sustain pressure on the government, while authorities remain focused on curbing further unrest in the capital.
