In response to ongoing student protests and accusations of police misconduct, the Chief Justice emphasized that the Supreme Court is dedicated to hearing all petitions that are properly submitted in accordance with legal standards. He assured that the court remains accessible to all individuals seeking justice, and that appropriate action will be taken when necessary.
Amidst the unrest stemming from the July 20 protests, where allegations of police excesses have surfaced, the CJI made it clear that the court’s intention has always been to address these issues through the proper legal channels. He addressed misunderstandings regarding the court’s earlier position, clarifying that the initial submission did not adhere to the formal requirements necessary for judicial review, as it was merely a representation rather than a formal petition.
Following the submission of formal petitions regarding the alleged police actions during the protests, the Supreme Court has agreed to schedule a hearing for these cases on Monday. This step underscores the judiciary’s willingness to engage with and address the grievances brought forth by citizens when the correct procedural steps are followed.
Furthermore, Chief Justice Kant warned against the spread of misinformation, particularly reports suggesting that the court had previously refused to entertain the matter.
