In a bid to enhance economic collaboration and strengthen trade ties, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in separate discussions with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Riikka Purra, as well as Minister of Economic Affairs, Sakari Puisto. The meetings aimed to deepen the partnership between India and Finland by focusing on strategic sectors and shared economic interests.

The dialogue highlighted the potential for cooperation in areas pivotal to both nations’ growth. Emphasis was placed on digitalisation, innovation, and the fostering of research and development. Additionally, the talks explored avenues for enhancing business partnerships and supporting startups, which are crucial for driving economic progress. The two countries also considered joint efforts in advancing emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, and semiconductors, as well as in the domains of space exploration and sustainability.

A significant aspect of the discussions was the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Both parties deliberated on how the agreement could serve as a catalyst for increasing bilateral trade, attracting investment, and unlocking new business opportunities. This potential pact is seen as a cornerstone for elevating economic relations between India and the European Union, offering a framework for expanded cooperation across various strategic sectors.

These meetings occur against the backdrop of ongoing negotiations between India and the EU, which are aimed at crafting a comprehensive trade agreement. The anticipated deal seeks to bolster economic ties and foster stronger collaboration in key industries, marking a pivotal step in the evolving economic relationship between India and Finland, as well as with the broader European Union.
