The European Union (EU) has underscored India’s status as a vital strategic partner, emphasizing the strengthening collaboration across trade, technology, security, and connectivity. Both parties are diligently working toward finalizing a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end. As Ireland assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union, Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly highlighted that the EU’s partnership with India spans beyond commerce, extending into technology, research, climate action, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital cooperation.
Ambassador Kelly noted that the intensifying relationship between India and the EU aims to tackle shared global challenges and foster sustainable economic growth. The proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement, with negotiations now concluded, is anticipated to be formally signed by December, potentially taking effect early next year. With the evolving global economic and geopolitical landscape, both sides are broadening their cooperation in crucial sectors, including defense, security, and emerging technologies.
EU Ambassador Herve Delphin remarked on the adaptability of Europe and India to the shifting global dynamics, emphasizing the pursuit of greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust partnerships. He highlighted the necessity of safeguarding the freedom of navigation and securing global trade routes. Delphin called for enhanced India-EU collaboration on maritime security and the promotion of regional stability.
