US Official: No Summit “Necessary” After Rubio-Lavrov Call

by admin477351

A US official indicated Tuesday that a presidential summit is not “necessary” at this time, following a “productive” call between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The official, speaking anonymously, stated there are “no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the immediate future.”
This walks back President Trump’s announcement from last week of a Budapest summit “within two weeks.”
The Kremlin confirmed the change in plans, with a spokesperson stating there is “no precise timeframe” for a meeting.
This diplomatic episode unfolds as Trump was also scheduled to meet Ukraine’s President Zelensky to discuss providing US-made Tomahawk missiles, which are capable of striking deep into Russia.
