Sora users are gaining access to a century of Disney animation history through a $1 billion investment and licensing deal with OpenAI. The three-year agreement provides rights to over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises.
Disney announced Thursday that the partnership enables users to create short social videos featuring beloved characters from across Disney’s animation legacy through text-based prompts. These AI-generated videos can be shared and viewed by fans, bringing classic and modern characters together in new ways. The licensing terms carefully exclude any use of talent likenesses or voices.
The collaboration extends throughout Disney’s operations. The company will become a major OpenAI customer, utilizing AI tools for new product development and experiences while deploying ChatGPT for employee productivity. This broad integration reflects Disney’s strategic view of AI as transformative to entertainment and business.
Bob Iger, Disney’s chief executive officer, characterized the partnership as marking a pivotal moment for the entertainment industry. He stressed that Disney would approach generative AI thoughtfully and responsibly, ensuring the technology extends the company’s storytelling capabilities while respecting and protecting creative professionals. This framing addresses concerns about AI’s impact on entertainment workers.
Hollywood studios have generally maintained distance from AI companies, worried about data usage and labor relations. OpenAI has been in discussions with several major studios about Sora’s applications, but Disney’s agreement represents a significant breakthrough. The platform’s September update introduced social features, enabling users to generate videos from text descriptions, view community content, and produce AI avatars that can be incorporated into videos with appropriate permissions.
